One of the leading causes of death in captive penguins is malaria. Zookeepers try to fight the disease, dosing penguins with pills and medication every summer, however, this does not always work. The most recent major American outbreak was in Blank Park Zoo, only 8 of the 46 penguins survived, despite being given full treatment from the National Animal Disease Center. Zookeepers are now helping build antibodies in penguins, to help them fight the disease, not hide from it. (Read more…)
