Researchers from many Russian institutions have confirmed that a fossil from Siberia belongs to one of the oldest ancestors of modern, domestic dogs. It is called the “Altai dog,” after the fossil’s home in the Altai Mountains of Siberia. For many years, scientists have believed that the separation of domesticated dogs from wolves ocurred maybe around 100,000 years ago. Because of the technology of DNA sequencing, it has been revealed that more modern dogs are related to this ancient creature than wolves are.
