Fungus Killing off Darwin’s Frogs

There has been a major decline in a species of frogs called “Southern Darwin’s Frog”. This is the only species of frog that the male is able to get pregnant by storing the tadpoles in a compartment in their throat. Researchers have discovered that the reason for such a drop in the population of this species is because of a fungus called chytrid. Scientists have found that this fungus kills this particular species of frogs easier than other frogs. This fungus is also the reason for the extinction of northern Darwin’s frogs and is rapidly killing southern Darwin’s. Habitat loss is also contributing to the decline of the species. (Read more…)
